Hi, I'm Krystal!

This Homemade Mediterranean Hummus Dip is just like the store brands, but fresher! It has a great balance of flavor between savory and nuttiness, with notes of lemon, garlic, and tahini.

Hummus is a delicious way to incorporate legumes in to your dietary pattern. It is typically made with chickpeas, tahini, and lemon juice, as well as other personalized add ins. This hummus recipe is a great base to use when making different variations of hummus flavors. I also think this recipe is too easy not to try. I mean at the end of the day, who doesn’t want a fresher product over store bought?

Ingredient Homemade Mediterranean Hummus Dip:

  • Canned Chickpeas (this is the lazy way, over soaking and pressure cooking the chickpeas)
  • Tahini (which is sesame seed butter)
  • Olive oil
  • Lemon juice
  • Spices & salt

.

Important tips to remember with this recipe:

  • If you have the time, pour the chickpeas in a bowl of water, and rub off the outer skin. Or put it in a sieve under running water, and rub the skin off. Doing this allows for a smoother hummus dip. The outer skin can contribute towards a chunkier hummus. If you don’t mind chunky hummus, you can skip this step.
  • Use a quality tahini. SO much of the flavor in hummus comes from the tahini. Old tahini can leave your hummus lacking in nutty flavor and texture.
  • Use an ice cube or ice cold water for a fluffier, smoother hummus.
  • Stop blending the hummus midway and scrap the sides to make sure all the ingredients are incorporated.

Equipment

  • A high speed blender or food processor

Ingredients

  • 1 15 oz low sodium chickpeas, canned (drain & rinse)
  • 1/3 cup tahini (I used Trader Joe's brand)
  • 1/4 cup ice cold water
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • 1 juice of one lemon
  • toppings: olive oil, paprika, cumin, pine nuts, etc.

Instructions

  • Optional step: Fill a large bowl with water, pour rinsed chickpea in, rub off the outer skin. This helps the chickpeas blend smoothly.
  • Pour chickpeas in food processor or high speed blender. Add tahini, lemon juice, olive oil, salt, cumin, and garlic cloves.
  • Blend, and add ice cold water as it blends. Stop blending half way and scrape the sides, then continue to blend until smooth.
  • Scrape out into a serving dish, then smooth out and add toppings. Then serve.
