This bowl of Warm Apple Cinnamon oatmeal will put you in the fall mood, and will keep you full and satisfied all morning. You can also add other healthy fats or proteins to meet your nutrition needs/goals.
Now that we’re official in Fall, I’ve been in the mood to create more fall-themed recipes. My favorite memory about fall as a kid was apple picking season. In my humble opinion, New York has THE best apple orchards. I mean they call it the Big Apple for a reason. Apples are also known to be the most commonly eaten fruit in America. This is great because apples (for the most part) tend to be available in various neighborhood grocery stores, and bodegas. Oatmeal also tends to be something that some people gravitate towards when they’re looking for breakfast on the go. So I figured why not pair the two together!
Ingredients for Warm Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal:
- Apples: I just so happened to go apple picking in September, and I picked some McIntosh apples. However, you can choose your favorite apple variety here
- Brown Sugar: To add extra sweetness. This is optional for those of you who like your oatmeal unsweetened
- Cinnamon + Nutmeg: For warmth, and aroma
- Oatmeal: I used Old-Fashioned Rolled Oats here. But you can use Steel cut, or boxed oats if that’s available to you
- Dairy-free Butter: This gives a mouthfeel to the cooked apples
- Toppings: I used honey roasted pecans & hemp seeds for extra fat and protein
How do I cook this?
I made this recipe on the stovetop because I had the time to. A pro tip to cut down on the cooking time of oats, is to soak your oats in water overnight. Then you would drain it, and use fresh water to cook it. Another option is, when you purchase your oats from the store, toast it in the oven on 300°F for 10 mins, or until slightly browned, then return it to the container or storage jar. If you typically use instant oats, you can cook it according the packet, and then add your spices and sugar. For the cooked apples, you would need to cook this via stove top. One of the great things about this recipe is that it serves two, so I tend to make 4 servings worth for my weekly breakfast meal prep.

Warm Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal
Ingredients
Oatmeal
- 1 cup old fashioned rolled oats
- 2 cups water
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- a pinch of nutmeg (less than 1/4 tsp or around that)
- a pinch of salt (less than 1/4 tsp or around that)
- 1 tbsp brown sugar (optional)
Spiced Apple topping
- 2 apples, diced
- 1 tsp dairy-free butter
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- a pinch of nutmeg
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
Toppings
- a small handful of honey roasted pecans (chopped), hemp seeds, or nut butter
Instructions
- In a sauce pan, add oats, water, spices, salt, and brown sugar, and cook on medium to high heat. Stirring occasionally to avoid the oats boiling over. Cook for about 5 minutes, or until oats have thickened. Once cooked, turn off heat, and set aside.
- In another small saucepan, add butter to the pot, and let it melt on low to medium heat. Then add chopped apples, sugar, and spices. Stir and let it simmer for 5-7 minutes, or until the apples soften and bubble, but still have texture.
- Then serve oatmeal with apple topping, and honey roasted pecans (or your preferred toppings).
